Symptoms
Plants show red discoloration on the edges of older leaves, with a yellowgreen transition zone. Leaf size is not affected.
Causes
Phosphorus deficiency (right)
Phosphorus is important during early growth, especially for root development. However, deficiency is rarely seen as brassicas are efficient in extracting P from soil. Undersupply is often connected with cold soils and drought.
Broccoli is more sensitive to P deficiency than cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts.
Broccoli: 4 l/ha applied soon after transplanting. Water rate: 200 l/ha. Alternatively: 2 to 3 applications of 5 to 10 l/ha from stem extension/head development at 7 to 14 day intervals. Water rate: 200 l/ha.
