Urea Stewardship Explained
From April 2024 onwards, the use of untreated urea-based fertilisers is prohibited after April 1st each year. Farmers must now utilise urease inhibitors or alternative nitrogen sources to comply with the latest environmental regulations. This change aims to reduce ammonia emissions and enhance nitrogen use efficiency, delivering benefits for both farm productivity and environmental sustainability.
Why Has the Legislation Changed?
The UK government has introduced this regulation as part of its commitment to reducing air pollution and meeting environmental targets. Urea-based fertilisers, when applied to the soil, can rapidly break down and release ammonia into the atmosphere. This contributes to air pollution and nitrogen losses, reducing fertiliser efficiency and impacting farm economics.
By requiring the use of urease inhibitors, the government aims to:
Reduce emissions by up to 70%
Improve nitrogen efficiency
Minimise nitrogen losses
What Are Urease Inhibitors?
Urease inhibitors are compounds that temporarily slow down the conversion of urea into ammonium, reducing the risk of ammonia volatilisation by inhibiting the activity of the urease enzyme. This means more nitrogen stays in the soil, where it is available for plant uptake, enhancing fertiliser efficiency.
Yara’s Solutions for Compliance and Improved Crop Nutrition
At Yara, we understand the importance of supporting farmers on this topic, that’s why we offer a range of high-quality fertilisers that are compliant with the stewardship scheme.
YaraVera Urease Inhibitor Technology
Yara’s range of urea-based products with urease inhibitors deliver high-performance results. These inhibitors reduce ammonia volatilisation, making nitrogen more available for crop growth and increasing the overall efficiency of fertiliser applications.
